Thunderspire Labyrinth: Part Eight – Gone Digital!

September 20, 2010 Leave a comment

Well, we’ve finally done it. The grognards have gone digital. Digital D&D – or as I like to call it DD&D. With the wealth of computer knowledge we have in the group, I’m surprised it’s taken this long. So, inaddition to the usual session recap, I’d like to outline to you good readers how our DM pulled it off and what tools we used.

The Hardware: Two laptops, a big screen plasma TV, an HDMI cable and a wireless network

The Software: Fantasy Grounds II (the Ultimate edition) for use as the virtual table top, maps produced with Campaign Cartographer 3, a DDI subscription for access to the D&D Compendium for quick rules look-ups and of course the excellent Character Builder and finally at least one player using iPlay4E as his character sheet.

Other than that we figuratively and literally “rolled” as normal. I still rolled real dice to hit and do damage, I told him where to move my fighter (north two squares and then northwest one), I still kept tracking of the conditions I was under and those I applied.

The Best Part? Probably the maps. It was great to have very colorful and detailed maps projected on the big screen. Much better than the hand drawn fair we normal use.

The Worst? Set-up of all this electronic goodness is always a bit of a hassle. The Fantasy Grounds II beta client was a bit unreliable – BUT it is beta after all. The workaround was simply to project the image from the Fantasy Grounds II server on the DM laptop. The DM juggled windows on the laptop and big screen to keep all the senstive DM-only info off of the big screen. Other than that, I hated watching the dust gather on my dragonborn warrior mini. If we ever get the big screen horizontal on a table top, that problem will be solved – and it will be awesome.

In this final session, Gorn and his three remaining companions confront (and barely overcome) both Maldrick Scarmaker and Paldemar in the final battle. You read that right – four PCs, two bosses, one hairy battle.

Thunderspire Labyrinth: Part Seven

In this seventh session, Gorn and his companions recover the final two symbols (a Mask and a Tome) that they need to access and defeat their ultimate foe. The Mask was deep within a fun-house chamber filled with mirrored columns and eyeless undead. Is it me or is every mirror in every dungeon put there with malevolent intent? The Tome is found within a chamber buried under a chill altar enshrouded by the mad whispers of an unseen foe. Symbols in hand, they unravel the locking runes, battle through the ensuing chaos and prepare for the final battle.

Thunderspire Labyrinth: Part Six

For their sixth session, Gorn and his companions defeat the blackfang gnolls and press on to discover a sacrificial altar, chill areas, magical pools, and a particularly entertaining encounter with three ghosts of adventurers past. Trying to impress the shades, The Bishop commands “Be gone lesser shades of a wasted time!” They comply and do just that – leaving the heroes only slightly wiser as to their next step.

The crew then recovers the first two symbols needed to access and defeat their ultimate foe – the Barbed Bone Bell and the Split Blade.

Thunderspire Labyrinth: Part Five

We have another session in the great underground labyrinth of the minotaurs coming up, so I need to get the old blog up to date on Gorn’s adventures.

For their fifth session, Gorn and his companions fall prey to a rather obvious ambush by a pair of tieflings and their bronze warden constructs – then proceed to overcome a tentacled horror and cavern chokers at the Well of Demons. They ultimately track down the first fruits of their quarry – the Blackfang gnolls.

Thunderspire Labyrinth – Part Four

For our fourth session in the great underground labyrinth of the minotaurs, Gorn and his companions breach the very gates of the Horned Hall. Aramil puts his eladrin teleport ability to precise use to flash beyond the guarded gates. Anatole, the party’s wizard, inflicts a tremendous amount of damage on an ogre and his four orc team by launching a fireball into their midst and following it up with an action point and flaming sphere. In the great final battle, the group defeats Murklumor and his spiny devils and rescues a few slaves.

Thunderspire Labyrinth – Part the Third

Back from vacation and it is good to be back!

While in Costa Rica, I grabbed some neat shots of stone and moss that gave a suitable dungeon feel. Since I’m a fan a graphics and textures, look forward to an inspirational shot or two that you can use in your own games as backdrops or for messages. In the meantime, following is the third installment of our latest campaign.

For our third session in the great underground labyrinth of the minotaurs, Gorn and his companions storm the gates of the Horned Hall. Along the way they defeat the captain of the orc guard, Erwall, and the duergar boss, Rundar. Delfin, the rogue in our party, used an enemy positioning effect to push Erwall into his own shard storm, thereby forcing him to drop the area effect – a brilliant move that neatly nullified a problematic obstacle.
