Catt’s 4E: Character Generation

Alright folks, here’s the scoop on generating characters. We’re using the following resources:

  • D&D 4e Rules Compendium (really just rules stuff in here)
  • Heroes of the Fallen Lands (Clerics, Fighters, Rogues, Wizards)
  • Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms (Druids, Paladins, Rangers, Warlocks)

We’re doing point buy and there are some race/class restrictions. Specifically, don’t get all lathered up about tiefling warlocks or dragonborn anti-paladins – these just ain’t gonna happen ’cause we’d spend all the party’s time thinking up ways not to get you killed on sight by civilized folk.

Ability Scores:
Per pg 78 of the Rules Compendium, except use a 26 Point Buy (instead of 22 points), minimum ability score 8, maximum 18. Using this method, you should be able to generate two super scores (and suck in all the rest), one super score (and one tanked), or a more balanced character.

Example Arrays are:
18, 18, 8, 8, 8, 8
18, 16, 11, 10, 10, 8
18, 14, 14, 10, 10, 8
16, 16, 16, 10, 9, 8
16, 15, 14, 14, 10, 8
16, 14, 14, 14, 10, 10
14, 14, 14, 14, 12, 12

Apply Racial bonuses after point buy – that should get you that much sought after 20, if you so desire.

Races:
To maintain some of that Tolkien/old school feel, races are selected that have AD&D counterparts. Read up in the “Heroes of the …” on racial abilities as many have been revised. Specifically, you can choose to be…

  • Human
  • Dwarf
  • Halfling
  • Half-Elf
  • Elf (along the lines of Wood Elves, etc.)
  • Eladrin* (along the lines of High Elves)

*note: that the Eladrin Fey Step is limited to distances that you can physically traverse – no popping through key holes, etc.

Classes:
So far these are the classes that are good to go for the campaign. I’m taking a look at a few others, but if your favorite is down here then go for it! Many of these can be tailored or have customization options that you’ll want to read up on.
